Membership Specialists - Part Time

The Sam Houston Area Council is looking for an energetic and detail-oriented individual who enjoys making a difference, being part of a team, and takes pride in their work.  Position Description:  Assist district executives/district directors with sign-up night flier delivery to schools, conduct in-person promotion (e.g., Scout Talks) of Sign Up Night with students, attend back-to-school events, and be responsible for submitting all applications and fees collected at sign-up night events.  The employee will also assist in guiding new Scouting units (Cub Scout packs, Scouts BSA Troops, and Venturing crews) through the steps of new unit organization.  Through this process, the employee will assist new chartering organizations in the identification of adult volunteers for new Scouting, assist through district and BSA resources to be trained, and guide the new adult leaders through the start-up of new unit’s programming to ensure the program is launched and the new unit is chartered.  Other duties as assigned.  Position Status: Seasonal Employee (August 1st – December 31st), non-exempt, no medical insurance benefits.  Salary: $15 hourly.  Interested applicants should send their resume to dustin.dupuis@scouting.org.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with a volunteer board of directors and other community and business leaders to identify, recruit, train, guide, and inspire them to become involved in youth programs.
  • Achieve progress towards specific goals and objectives which include: program development through collaborative relationships, volunteer recruitment and training, fundraising, membership recruitment and retention.
  • Responsible for extending programs to religious, civic, fraternal, educational, and other community-based organizations through volunteers.
  • Secure adequate financial support for programs in assigned area. Achieve net income and participation objectives for assigned camps and activities.
  • Recruit finance leaders to drive campaign efforts aimed at fulfilling the organization's financial requirements.
  • Ensure that all program sites are served through volunteers, regular leader meetings, training events and activities.
  • Collaborate with adult volunteers and oversee achievement of training for their respective role.
  • Be a role model and recognize the importance of working relationships with other professionals and volunteers.
  • Possess strong communication skills, adept at articulating the program's goals and objectives to the public.
  • Provide quality service through timely communication, regular meetings, training events and activities.
  • Have willingness and ability to devote long and irregular hours to achieve council and district objectives.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be willing to accept and meet the Boy Scout of Americas leadership and membership standards and subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (transcript with the date degree conferred stated is required for employment).
  • 21 years of age or older unless prohibited by any applicable law.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed including evening activities and weekends.
  • Ability to spend extensive time traveling within position territory services.
  • Ability to travel within the lower 48 states for training at least once a year for one to two weeks.
  • Strong communication skills and must be comfortable with public speaking and interacting with diverse audiences.
  • Must exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills characterized by enthusiasm, punctuality, responsibility, and creativity.
  • Needs to maintain current driver’s license and automotive insurance and drive own personal motor vehicle for council business (to be reimbursed for mileage at current IRS-approved rate).  
  • Employment is subject to criminal, reference, and motor vehicle background checks.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Strong marketing, fund-raising and program development background is highly desired.
  • Non-profit, fundraising or sales experience is a plus.
  • Self-motivated individual with solid time management skills and strong organizational skills in management, budgeting, and planning.

Scout Shop Sales Associate

Job Overview: Contributes to the successful daily operation of the Scout Shop by processing sales, keeping accurate timekeeping records, receiving orders, stocking shelves, and maintaining a clean, customer-friendly environment. Flexible schedules, closed on Sundays, no late nights, employee discount, and a free uniform provided.

The individual in this position will:

  • Provide excellent customer service in the store and on the phone.
  • Processes customer orders through the POS system.
  • Maintains a stocked, organized, and clean store.
  • Opens and closes the store as directed by management using the prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Safeguards BSA monies and merchandise.

Qualifications/ Experience:  The qualified candidate must have:

  • Knowledge of Scouting program preferred
  • Good communication skills
  • Retail experience a plus, but not necessary
  • Flexible availability
